LG celebrates 5 million Viewtys in 14 months

Touchscreen, 3.5G, 5-megapixel autofocus camera -- what's there not to like? It's a winning formula, obviously, as evidenced by LG's announcement that they've managed to push some 5 million Viewty handsets around the globe since the series' launch a little over a year ago. North America sadly excluded, variants of the Viewty have graced large swaths of Europe and Asia, and if we had to guess, LG's tasteful application of color to the different models probably has something to do with the rousing success. And heck, if they wanted to bring it to the States, we'd wager they could sell a few more before this craze has run its course.

Pantech's Sky IM-S400L slider with "Glide Sensor" keypad debuted in Korea

Pantech's SKY division has just released the quite handsome, Korea-only IM-S400L. The CDMA slider boasts a 2.6-inch LCD, and a keypad using the company's new "Glide Sensor" technology which it says operates like a laptop trackpad. We don't have much else in the way of specs for this puppy, but we do know that it's available in white, pink, blue and green for ₩500,000 -- about $395. Crème brulée is, sadly, not included.

LG's magical GD910 wrist phone packs touchscreen, camera and rainbows

It was deliciously inevitable that a watch phone would eventually show up that could actually "pack it all in," and it looks like LG has actually accomplished that feat in its LG-GD910 model. Of note, the phone packs a touchscreen LCD, 3G data, and a built-in camera for videoconferencing and being a general badass. Sure, browsing to your favorite gadget blog might be a tad bit difficult on that 1.43-inch screen, and there's always the question of fashion, but those are minor quibbles -- the real question is where can we get one, and for how much. LG should be showing this off at CES next month (it showed off a predecessor this January), and plans to release it in Japan and Europe, but we've got a couple of cereal box-delivered 2-way wrist radios crossed behind our backs in hopes for a US berth.

LG's LU1400 swivels right into your heart

It's not every day that you see a wide VGA swivel with DMB support launching in South Korea. Oh, wait -- yes it is! The LU1400 from LG doesn't bring anything particularly new or fabulous to the table, but just about anything with a 2.8-inch 800 x 480 display is still pretty fabulous by our count. It's got a 3-megapixel cam, and if you care to take your glorious little toy outside the homeland, the LU1400 will roam on CDMA in 18 countries around the globe (including the States). And yes, if we see someone walking around New York with one of these, we will yoink it right out of their unsuspecting hands. Just a fair warning.

LG debuts dual-SIM KS660 overseas

LG's first ever dual-SIM handset will go down as being the completely forgettable KS660, like it or not. The touchscreen-centric mobile includes a 3-inch 400 x 240 resolution display, an integrated multimedia player, 50MB of inbuilt memory, a microSD expansion slot, FM radio, video recorder, Bluetooth 2.0, USB support and tri-band GSM connectivity. Sadly, you'll only find support for EDGE data, and WiFi is casually omitted as well. Chances are you won't find this one outside of China, Russia and a few nations in Europe when it launches in February, but we get the feeling it won't be sorely missed here in America.

LG's SH490 'Make-Up Phone' has something to do with makeup, we guess

Guess who the SH490 "Make-Up Phone" is looking to sell? If you said "men who wear no makeup," deduct three points and take a nap. Yeah, this Korean domestic flip from LG is pretty glitzy, and as the name implies, fashion is the first priority -- sure, the lid can flash any of 18 emoticons with its LED array, but we wouldn't exactly peg that as a high-tech feature, if you know what we mean. It features video calling and a 3-megapixel cam in your choice of Smoky Red, Deep Blue, and Pearl White, and if you absolutely must have it, expect to pay about 500,000 won ($384) on SK Telecom.

LG's KC780 gets hands-on video / gallery treatment

Oh, goodie! A double dose of hands-on goodness! LG's 8-megapixel KC780 has been snagged and photographed over in Taiwan, and the camera function in particular stole the show. We must say -- there's a lot of sophistication packed into this slider, and we actually got kind of week in the knees when seeing that lens 'round back. Have a look in the read link for the stills, and hop on past the break for a live action video.

LG's KB770 reviewed in a foreign tongue, unboxed in the universal language

The only information we had on LG's heretofore elusive KB770 was a not-at-all detailed FCC report. Now, however, we're getting our first good glimpse courtesy of a thorough review and hands-on extravaganza originating in the Czech Republic. LG has clearly designed this one with mobile TV and multimedia in mind, and that huge retractable antenna should make for easy reception for those in DVB-T territories. The overall design isn't a great departure from other like-minded handsets (read: the Vu), though critics did find the UI impressively simple to navigate and use. Sadly, the actual quality of the mobile TV -- which, again, is the main selling point here -- left a bit to be desired. All in all, the KB770 just didn't seem to execute as well as it should given the 8,900CZK ($471) price tag, but if you're still interested in seeing what it looks like from every angle imaginable (yes, even that one), the read link should be the next place your browser points to.

LG Prada II shows up in exhaustive photo spread

We've gotten a few decent looks at the LG Prada II in weeks past, but the Daily Mobile Forum has happened upon a veritable treasure chest of views of the device in glorious detail -- which, if you didn't already know -- is now on sale in Europe. Lucky devils. We've included a few of our favorites after the break, but hit the read link for all 17 (Yes, seventeen!).

[Thanks, Daniel]

LG's Prada II on sale in Europe for €600

You've had ample time to look LG's Prada II over, and by now, you know good and well whether or not you're dreaming of one under your tree. If you just so happen to be parked in Europe (or you don't mind the rather atrocious exchange rate for a possible import), you or your Secret Santa can snatch one of these handsets up for around €600 ($832) -- and no, that's not including the watch. Remind us again how much of that sticker is dedicated solely to five little letters?

LG Secret, Motorola VA76r "Tundra" confirmed for AT&T

We've suspected for a while that LG would be bringing a version of its ultra-thin, 5-megapixel Secret slider to AT&T, and now, we've got some hard evidence to back it up. The latest rebate form for the carrier -- dated December 26 to January 24, though that definitely doesn't guarantee the phone will launch in that timeframe -- lists a $50 discount on the CF750 Secret along with the Motorola VA76r "Tundra," a rugged flip that has already launched on Rogers and will be coming to do battle with Samsung's beefy Rugby. Exciting times to be on AT&T, eh?

LG's LU1600 clamshell is somehow linked to ice cream

We're not at all sure why LG's LG1600 is being coined the Ice Cream Phone 2, but it clearly isn't kidding around with the connection. Heck, it even put a presumably fake cone of mint chocolate chip in the hands of the gal to the left there. Anywho, said flip phone is expected to sport a 15.5-millimeter thick chassis, T-DMB mobile TV support, an electronic dictionary, EV-DO Rev. A compatibility and a color-changing exterior that will definitely not alert your eyes to an incoming call / message while it's tucked tightly away in your pocket. Those who are buying this thing regardless simply due to the (very) loose connection with that certain dairy product can select one in sky blue, snow white or peach pink for between ₩400,000 ($297) and ₩500,000 ($371).

LG Vu now official in burgundy

Mum's still the word with AT&T, but LG's gone ahead and spilled the beans on the burgundy version of the Vu -- a phone that's starting to look a little long in the tooth in the face of its newer competition from Samsung, so what better way to freshen things up than with a new color? Only the MediaFLO-equipped CU920 version of the phone seems like it's coming in the new shade, so if you were hoping to squeeze by without having to buy the mobile TV circuitry, we're afraid you might walk away disappointed. Let us know if you see this one galavanting around stores, won't you?

LG's KP500 gets proper unboxing

LG's KP500 looked attractive enough under imperfect lighting conditions, but just in case an in the wild gallery wasn't enough to satisfy your curiosity, Daily Mobile has found the time to give the touchscreen-based handset a proper unboxing. We didn't spot anything out of the ordinary (no aliens or Easter Eggs, for instance), but we were delightfully reminded of just how slim this bugger is. Have a look yourself in the read link.

Regulatory revision opens up South Korean handset market

Good news for South Koreans who love choice; bad news for LG and Samsung... sort of. For those unaware, South Korea is currently under a rule that requires cellphones that connect to the internet to "use domestic software that standardizes network access." In theory, the regulation makes life easier for local software developers, but in reality, it has enabled locally-based LG and Samsung to combine for around 90% of all handset sales in the nation. Moving forward, however, the Korea Communications Commission intends to modify the barrier (effective next April) so that cellphone operators can use "any type of phone" they choose. We suspect three cheers for competition are in order.
